An AI answer can quote a real policy and still be wrong. The policy may have been replaced, apply to another entity or describe a limit that was effective last quarter. A clickable citation proves that a passage exists. It does not establish that the passage governs the question being asked.
Retrieval-augmented generation, usually shortened to RAG, supplies a model with material retrieved for a particular request. That can reduce dependence on what the model learned during training. It also creates a new operating chain: source selection, ingestion, indexing, retrieval and answer construction. Each stage can lose the context that makes a financial fact usable.
Give the evidence an identity that survives processing
A source URL is a useful locator but a weak version identifier. The file at that address may change while the URL stays constant. For important evidence, preserve the document identifier, version, content fingerprint, owner, publication date and applicable period. Connect each extracted passage to its location inside that version.
The W3C provenance framework describes relationships among entities, activities and responsible agents. An institution does not need to adopt the entire framework to use the distinction. The original document is one entity, the parsing process is an activity and the resulting passage is another entity. Recording those relationships helps explain how the model received a particular statement.
A document's identity should also distinguish a source from a derivative. A research note quoting an issuer filing is not the filing itself. A translated contract is not necessarily the controlling language. The system can retrieve both, but its record should show which was used and why the derivative was acceptable for the task.
There are several different clocks
Publication time answers when a source was issued. Effective time answers when its contents apply. Ingestion time answers when the institution obtained it. Index time answers when the retrieval system made it searchable. Answer time answers when the user relied on the result. Treating these as one timestamp conceals the gaps between them.
A recently indexed document may contain an old rule. A newly published amendment may take effect next month. A current market figure may be stale for execution while remaining suitable for a historical report. Freshness therefore needs a rule tied to the question, rather than a badge saying that the database was updated today.
Make the requested time explicit. A query about the policy at a previous reporting cutoff should search the historical effective set. A query about today's permitted limit should resolve later amendments and revocations. Automatically preferring the newest file can be as wrong as ignoring updates.
The ingestion gap is an operating exposure
Amazon Bedrock's knowledge base documentation explains that source additions, modifications and removals require synchronisation, and describes incremental processing of changed documents. This is a concrete reminder that the source repository and the retrieval index are separate systems. Changing the source does not, by itself, establish what a user can retrieve.
Measure the interval between an approved source change and its availability to the application. A successful scheduled job is useful evidence, but it is not enough if individual documents fail parsing or their metadata maps incorrectly. Reconcile expected documents, versions and deletion outcomes against what the retriever can actually return.
Deletion deserves an explicit test. A withdrawn document may remain in an index, an answer cache or a previously generated summary. The institution should know which copies are removed, which records must be retained for audit and which older outputs need warnings. Retention and current availability have different purposes.
A hypothetical limit question
Hypothetical example: an operations team asks whether a specific token can be accepted as collateral for a client. The search finds a policy approving the asset and returns a confident answer. An amendment issued two days earlier restricts eligibility to a different legal entity. The original policy remains useful for historical questions, but it no longer settles this one.
The failure can arise without any invented statement. The retriever may rank the longer original policy above the short amendment. A chunk may omit the entity heading. The answer generator may combine the asset name from one document with a limit from another. A source citation beneath the paragraph will not reveal these joins unless the review follows the evidence at claim level.
A better response resolves the entity and requested date first, retrieves the policy family, checks superseding records and returns the relevant restriction with its effective period. If those relationships are incomplete, the answer should describe the unresolved point and route the question to the policy owner. Guessing the relationship defeats the value of retrieval.
Metadata is part of the financial control
Microsoft's RAG design and evaluation guide covers preparation, chunking, retrieval and assessment as connected design choices. In financial use, metadata needs business ownership alongside technical ownership. Legal entity, jurisdiction, product scope and effective period cannot safely be inferred from a filename whenever an answer is requested.
Use validation rules for required metadata and a process for uncertain classifications. Splitting a policy into searchable passages should carry its governing header into each passage or maintain a reliable link back to it. A perfect sentence extracted without the clause's exceptions is weak evidence.
Permissions need the same continuity. If an analyst loses access to a source, the retrieval layer and relevant caches should reflect that change. A search result should not disclose restricted content merely because the index was built while access was broader. Test permission changes separately from content updates.
Give users a way to report an obsolete source directly from the answer. Route that report to the source owner and the retrieval operator, because the correction may belong in either place. Retain the original answer record so the team can identify other decisions that used the same version.
Evaluate the evidence chain, not only answer fluency
Build questions whose answers change after a dated amendment, depend on an entity qualifier or require admitting that information is unavailable. Review whether the right evidence was retrieved before scoring the final response. Otherwise a good model can mask a broken retriever, or a poor answer can be blamed on retrieval that worked correctly.
Useful measures include superseded-source use, missing effective dates, unsupported claims, correct abstentions and time taken to propagate an approved change. Report them by use case. A policy helpdesk and a market-risk calculation have different tolerances for delay, even when both use the same search platform.
The same distinction appears in blockchain indexer data quality: available data can be wrong for the decision. Token identifiers and reference data show why entity and asset identity also need explicit handling. A retrieval system improves financial work when its evidence can be located, dated and challenged. The citation is the beginning of that examination.
