David Cunningham
President, Consensys
David Cunningham has argued that financial institutions and market infrastructure are moving to always-on operation with tokenisation at the core, a theme that runs from his work on Citi Token Services to his appointment as president of the newly formed Consensys.
Why the room needs them.
David Cunningham was named president of the newly formed Consensys, the protocols and institutional infrastructure company, in September 2026. He spoke at Proof of Talk Paris 2026 on a Hecto Main Stage panel about stablecoins, tokenised deposits and money market funds, after earlier digital-asset work at Citi on Citi Token Services.

David Cunningham spoke at Proof of Talk Paris 2026, where the programme billed him as Global Head of Institutional Business at Consensys. On 3 June 2026, the second day of the summit, he joined the Hecto Main Stage panel "The New Architecture of Digital Cash: Stablecoins, Tokenised Deposits and Money Market Funds" with Emma Landriault, head of Labs at Kinexys, J.P. Morgan's blockchain business, and Tero Reuna. Ben Schiller moderated.
Cunningham reached that subject by way of a global bank. CoinDesk reported in August 2022 that Citi had given him a director-level role in strategic partner development for digital assets in its Treasury and Trade Solutions division, and that he had most recently been chief commercial officer at the regtech firm LexTego and chair of the crypto exchange Coinmama.
By November 2023 Silicon Republic described him as Citi's head of strategy and partnerships for digital assets, working across all blockchain-related activity in the treasury and trade solutions business. He told the publication he had spent the previous year working to bring Citi Token Services to life, a platform that integrates tokenised deposits and smart contracts into Citi's global network to upgrade cash management and trade finance. He described his partnerships work as collaborating with large businesses and start-ups "as we move to 24/7 always-on financial services," and acknowledged that blockchain "has often been accused of being a solution looking for a problem."
On 9 September 2026, three months after the Paris summit, Consensys Software Inc. announced that it would become two independent companies. The existing company is to be renamed MetaMask and keep the consumer platform, with Joe Lubin as chairman and chief executive. A newly formed company carrying the Consensys name is to take the protocols and institutional infrastructure business, including Linea, Besu and Teku. Cunningham was named its president, alongside chief executive Mike Kriak, with Lubin as executive chairman. The separation is expected to complete by the end of 2026.
In the announcement, Cunningham said financial institutions and market infrastructure "are moving to always-on operations with tokenization at the core," and described the new company's task as delivering the interoperability infrastructure that large financial marketplaces need, with the required privacy, resilience and scale.
What David believes about the next ten years.
Years of shipping.
Lines that keep proving correct.
“Financial institutions and market infrastructure are moving to always-on operations with tokenization at the core. Consensys Software Inc. has built the open-source technology that is the foundation of this transition. We are now delivering the interoperability infrastructure that the world's largest financial marketplaces need to coordinate this transformation with the required privacy, resilience and scale.”
“I also look after partnerships where we collaborate with other large businesses and with start-ups who can help us on our journey as we move to 24/7 always-on financial services.”
“As a technology, blockchain has often been accused of being a solution looking for a problem.”
