Founder, Algorand

Cryptographic research meets the design of public financial infrastructure.

The Significance

Why the room needs them.

Algorand founder whose research connects public ledgers, cryptographic verification and the design of decentralized financial infrastructure.

The Biography

The full account.

Silvio Micali is the founder of Algorand and a previous Proof of Talk speaker. His professional work connects cryptographic research with the design of public blockchain infrastructure. MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory lists his research interests as cryptography, zero knowledge, pseudorandom generation, secure protocols, mechanism design and blockchain. Algorand's founding history dates the project to 2017 and describes its original objective as accommodating scale without giving up security or decentralized participation.

Micali and Jing Chen coauthored the Algorand research paper first submitted in July 2016 and subsequently revised in May 2017. The paper examines how a public ledger can maintain an agreed transaction history among distributed participants. It sets out a design based on Byzantine agreement rather than computational competition through proof of work. That research provides a concrete basis for discussing consensus: how participants agree on records, how a system handles malicious behavior, and what resources participation requires.

The network's Pure Proof-of-Stake design uses cryptographic selection of committees from participating token holders. A 21Shares research note describes this selection process and the role of the Algorand Virtual Machine in supporting smart contracts. These are features of the protocol and its development community, rather than claims of individual product delivery.

In March 2026, Algorand Foundation and Algorand Technologies announced an agreement consolidating protocol development, support and intellectual property at the Foundation. The announcement identified Micali as Algorand's creator and Algorand Technologies founder. He endorsed unified operations as a way to advance the project's original aims. Proposed protocol changes continued to require consensus-participant approval. His profile therefore spans the mathematical foundations of blockchain and the organizational question of how an open network is maintained as applications for payments, assets and financial services develop.

The next Proof of Talk is in Abu Dhabi.

Louvre Abu Dhabi, 3–4 December 2026. Admission is by application, and the room is capped at 2,000.
